Here’s the Loki Sword That We Want to See In the MCU
What’s in this article?
For fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Loki is the mischievous sibling of Thor. As a trickster god, Loki can be quite sneaky even when he’s on the protagonists’ side and his weapon kit reflects this as he typically uses magic or seidr to fight, rather than pure brawn and martial skill.
However, there are versions of Loki that can and have wielded a sword in the Marvel comics. The recent show adaptation of Loki, which features alternative versions of Loki across parallel worlds, shows off all of Loki’s iterations, some of which are physically stronger than he is in his own world.
Loki’s Signature Weapons Aren’t A Sword
Even with that said, Loki’s signature weapon isn’t a sword. Aside from his magic, he typically uses his daggers. In a fight, he pulls them out from the upper parts of his sleeves or from behind his back before using them for melee combat.
However, Loki rarely lets this happen as he will often use his daggers for throwing instead of hand to hand combat, likely because his slight build puts him at a disadvantage in a fight. We see the daggers in the first Avengers movie, where Loki fights against Thor and his Mjolnir, and in the Thor movies when he fights alongside his adoptive brother.
Speaking of the first Avengers, the movie features another recognizable weapon used by Loki – the scepter. The scepter is shown to have mind controlling abilities when it still held the Mind Stone, a.k.a the Tesseract, within it. Loki uses this ability during the opening scene of Avengers and the battle of New York.
Kid Loki Is Among the Few Versions of Loki to Use A Sword
The Loki we all know and love from the main Earth featured on the MCU isn’t proficient with a sword so he doesn’t use one. That said, his other versions have different skill sets so it’s only natural for at least one of them to use a sword. One of these versions is Kid Loki or Sylvie who uses the sword Laevateinn.
The Laevateinn sword first appeared in the comic Journey Into Mystery’s 115th issue where Loki uses it against Thor, showing that the sword likely has comparable power to Mjolnir if not equal to it. The sword displays a supernatural sharpness and complements Loki’s magic-based fighting style since it allows him to phase it through dimensions and make it reappear. This ability is referenced in Loki: Agent of Asgard.
Laevateinn: The Loki Sword from Norse Mythology
That said, the comics aren’t the first time Laevateinn makes an appearance in any form of media. The Thor and Loki franchises are based on Norse mythology, a much older source material than any of its adaptations.
The Laevateinn sword is first mentioned in the Poetic Edda, a series of epic poems revolving around the gods of Asgard and Vanaheimr. It was created by Loki and is said to be the only sword capable of killing Vidofnir, the cockerel that rests on the Mimameidr, a magical tree similar to Yggrasil. Speaking of trees, the sword itself has sylvan origins.
In the edda, Laevateinn or “Haevatein” is described as “a twig” that Loki plucked near the gate of Death, indicating that it may also be part of a magical tree or plant.
Laevateinn Replicas Are Hard to Come By
Usually, copies of Laevateinn are custom made by and for cosplayers due to the sword’s limited popularity. This makes it difficult to find a mass produced copy of the sword. However, the fact that there are fewer copies to go around and having to be made by more specialized creators mean that Loki sword replicas are typically higher quality and detailed.
Copies of Loki’s daggers are easier to come by, but both the sword and daggers are commonly made of material such as PBS or ABS plastic, stainless steel, and wood. We recommend the first two as they are better suited to the type of sword that Laevateinn is.
Conclusion
Loki swords are rarely manufactured due to their low popularity and demand, but getting one isn’t impossible – and shouldn’t feel like it is! Just keep an eye out for custom replica calls on online cosplay circles as well as sites that mainly supply props and costume materials to cosplayers as these are likelier to stock the Laevateinn.
