Wonder Woman is primarily known for her shield and Lasso of Truth, but as we’ve seen in the recent Wonder Woman movies, she also knows how to swing a sword. Though the “it girl” of DC Comics only recently graced the silver screens compared to her Marvel counterparts, she’s already gone through two magical swords.
Her first sword, the God Killer, was broken in the fight against Ares in the first movie. By Wonder Woman1984, it was already replaced by the flashier Sword of Athena. Lucky for you, you won’t have to lose one sword to gain the other because these Wonder Woman movie swords will let you live out your Amazonian dreams.
DC Comics’ Wonder Woman Didn’t Always Have a Sword
Though the recent movies make it look like Diana of Themyscira was always meant to have a sword, older DC Comics comic books and series show her only with her Bracelets of Submission and Lasso of Truth. These were the weapons she had when she debuted in the October 1941 issue of All Star Comics.
Diana’s bracelets are bulletproof and produce a wave of energy when struck together. Meanwhile, Wonder Woman’s lasso can force people to tell the truth as long as they’re entangled in it.
While the two weapons are a nod to the creator’s penchant for Bondage, Dominance, Submission, and Masochism (BDSM), they also showed that Diana was a weapon in her own right. As an Amazon warrior who trained for centuries, Diana is strong enough to take on enemies barehanded. Plus, she’s the daughter of Zeus, the king of Olympus, and Queen Hippolyta, leader of the Amazons, so she has superhuman strength and durability.
Diana’s Sword and Shield Were Likely Made By Hephaestus
Wonder Woman is heavily influenced by Greek mythology, hence many fans have theorized that Diana’s sword and shield were made by Hephaestus, the god of the forge. This god is known for making a number of powerful weapons in Greek mythology and, in many versions of the Wonder Woman comics, gives Diana her bracelets, lasso, and tiara.
Another reason why fans think the movies will reveal Hephaestus as the creator of Diana’s weapons is because Wonder Woman’s shield and sword reference his sister, Athena, the goddess of wisdom. Athena is also a wise and powerful warrior in Greek myth and the DC Comics so it would make sense that Diana’s shield, the Aegis, and her Sword of Athena are modeled after her because Hephaestus made them.
3 Best Wonder Woman Sword Replicas You Can Check Out
The DC Comics Wonder Woman and Warner Bros’ version may be different interpretations of the same source material, but if there’s one thing they can agree on, it’s that a valiant heroine needs a sword to go with her courage. These replica swords make for great conversation pieces and cosplay props that will impress other Justice League cosplayers.
Wonder Woman’s Steel God Killer Sword
Take out your Wonder Woman costume and embrace your destiny with this steel replica of the God Killer sword. It’s made of high quality stainless steel that allows for a deep, shiny engraving of Amazonian symbols. In the first movie, this sword was kept in a special place until Diana was ready to fulfill her destiny.
Though her sword ultimately failed to kill Ares, the god of war, and left her to do the job herself, this sword is sure to last you for years if given proper care. The serpent’s head crossguard and dove-tailed pommel are all made of the same steel as the rest of the sword.
Length: 105 cm
Material: Stainless steel
Wonder Woman’s Foam God Killer Sword
This replica of the God Killer sword is made of steel instead of foam. It’s a great alternative for you if you’re a cosplayer on a budget or if you just need a prop for a Halloween costume.
While this replica is nowhere near as flashy or as detailed as the steel God Killer sword, it still has all of the main details that the sword has in the movie. The blade has an engraving-styled design, a serpent’s head crossguard, and an intricately decorated pommel and handle.
Length: 102 cm
Material: PU Foam
Wonder Woman’s Sword of Athena
The Sword of Athena pulls inspiration from Wonder Woman’s character design from the original comics. The navy blue handle has silver rivets that simulate the stars found on Diana’s blue bottoms. Similarly, the gold tone used for this sword has a more bronze-like undertone that’s closer to the coloring on her Justice League animated series counterpart’s tiara than the God Killer sword.
This sword replica’s blade features three rows of engravings and a series of symbols that point to Diana’s heritage and personal qualities.
Length: 100 cm
Material: Steel
Conclusion
Times change and so does Wonder Woman. That said, the Princess of Themyscira is always well-equipped to save the day. While we can’t promise these replica swords will give you her powers, they’ll certainly look fantastic in a cosplay when paired with her shield and bracelets.
